SAMPLE TESTS

SIGMA – Skyview Invitational Games for Mathematical Achievement
Sponsored by : The Science, Math and Technology Magnet and Mu Alpha Theta, and the Math Team at Skyview

When: October 27, 2007 - Registration will begin @ 9:00 am. We expect to end by 2:30.
Where: Skyview High School, 1300 NW 139th St, Vancouver, WA

Cost: $35/team of 4; $10/individual

What:  Students will compete in three divisions based on the level of their highest math class – Mu (Calculus or beyond); Alpha (Precalc/Trig); Theta (2nd Yr Algebra or earlier). Middle schools students will be grouped in a fourth division.

NO calculators will be allowed throughout the day.

The 4 competitions (plus surprise event) will be:

• Mental Math – a brain-stretching test of pure mental math – no calculators or scratch work. Students will have to do the problems ENTIRELY in their heads and write ONLY the answer (no scratch work). One of the few math competitions given IN PEN.

• Speed Math – similar to Ciphering but with all the problems at once, this test will consist of questions in various areas of mathematics, with a focus on solving the problems quickly as well as effectively (pencil and paper allowed).

• Individual - Questions from a potpourri of topics in mathematics (multiple choice). No calculators.

• Team test – A collaborative test of 4 persons in the same division, similar to the individual test, but more grueling. Ad hoc teams of students from multiple schools will be constructed of those students without a team who choose to do so. Students may compete in higher divisions (i.e. Theta may compete in Mu or Alpha, Alpha may compete in Mu); but not down.

• Surprise Event – Fun award to top two schools.

Competitors in the High School Division will all take the same tests. 
Awards will be given in each division for each competition.

10/15/07 – Preliminary numbers. If you will be attending and approximately how many teams/students you will be bringing in each division (Mu, Alpha, Theta, Middle School)
10/24/07 – Final registration – provide final numbers of teams/students names in each division.
10/27/07 – Registration fee due at the door. Registration (8:30 – 9:15) First Competition starts at 9:20

Driving Directions: Skyview is on 139th west of I-5.  Take the 134th street exit off of I-5 go west 134th changes names and become 139th as you pass the Fred Meyers Shopping Center. Turn on 11th (just before the school) and enter the school through the 600 wing. Watch for signs.
